Vila – Manukoko

Start Vila town sign
Finish Vila town sign
Type Of Walk There and back
Distance 10.2km (return), climb to Manukoko Ridge 963m
Hours 5-6 hours walking return (not including stops)
Grade Hard (gradient, steep drop-offs and heat)
Highlights Excellent, expansive views from Manukoko ridge. Forest, birdlife and Cave of our Lady Mary.
Description From Vila initially head up steep road past Cave of our Lady Mary. Near Maulaco turn off onto track climbing steeply upwards towards Manukoko. Eventually vegetation changes to forest. Towards top join track from Anartutu and then head south-west still in forest until final narrow scrub covered rocky ridge near summit.  Enjoy the scenery – great views and then descend back down track.
Equipment/Footwear Trekking boots and walking pole recommended
Guides Guide compulsory (Manukoko is a sacred mountain and you must take a guide) – very easy to get off track (mist, track very overgrown); some very steep drop-offs (two very exposed traverses, one short vertical climb) and track can be slippery
Transport Not needed (staying Vila); could arrange 4WD transport part way (Cave of our lady Mary) reducing climb but road very rough
Variants Instead of returning to Vila; descend on west side to Anartutu village and then get 4WD pick up (Abaktedi or Anartutu) late afternoon – longer day but less walking and will see more of the Island
Other Early morning start definitely recommended. Only suitable when track dry.

Track not yet verified GPS; information sourced from guides. Recommended you notify your accommodation where you are walking (potential accident) and to walk with a companion; take water and protect yourself from the sun.
