Atekru is a sub-hamlet that includes the Adara hamlet. A one-hour walk from Mario’s Place in Adara, this is a great day hike for you to do when staying on the West coast. Take a walk there at sunset and hike alongside fishermen and women searching for sea creatures in the shallow tide pools along the beach, where locally crafted fishing boats line the shores. The community recently started to revive the local culture in terms of traditional dance, local dialect and games played for entertainment. The Na Terra NGO has also created an eco-lodge accommodation to host tourists, and it is possible to stay overnight in this village–possibly one of the most remote and beautiful places on the island! The village leaders can tell you about hidden legends and stories unique to Atekru. The community members are very friendly, making Atekru ideal for planning a trekking or multi-day tour.
