Adara to Atekru

  • Start: Adara
  • Finish: Adara
  • Distance: 8 km/5 mi
  • Walking Time: 2 hours walking via beach (return). Allow extra half hour if you need to take high tide route.
  • Difficulty: Easy (beach route low tide); Medium (high tide route) – has some short but steep sections.
  • Highlights: If you have decided to visit the famous Mario’s Place in Adara for a day of snorkeling and delicious local food, then this is a perfect hike to try during the morning or late afternoon to explore more of the coastline. Starting from Mario’s Place, simply walk south along the beach for approximately one hour until you reach Atekru. Be sure to bring some snorkel gear along to check out the reefs along the coastline. If you feel like spending the night in Atekru, you can contact NaTerra, a permaculture farm and ecolodge, to see if there are rooms available.
  • Trail Description: From Adara walk south along the beach to Atekru (low tide) – at times scrambling over rocks and walking in shallow water. If walking at high tide, climb up above the beach soon after leaving Adara, stay high and then drop down to Kitali before climbing back up above coast until reaching Atekru, descending again to the beach. The high tide route has some fantastic lookout points and you can also see village gardens.
  • Equipment: Sports sandals/good walking shoes (will get wet); walking pole useful on coast (walking over rocks can be slippery).
  • Guide: Recommended but not required. You will see and learn much more (e.g. finding out about village life, local gardens, fishing). A local guide is also helpful for locating best snorkeling sites and rock scrambling on coast; finding high tide routes will require assistance.
  • Variants: Can hire a boat from Adara to pick up or drop off at Atekru (extra cost) which reduces walk to one way (note: it can be difficult for boats to get into Atekru at low tide).
