  • Tuk Tuk History and Cultural Tour of Vila

Explore Vila in a tuk tuk, the best way to delve deep into the culture and history of Vila and learn more about its most iconic landmarks. The Portuguese first arrived on Ataúro island in 1520, starting its long history of colonization. The island was mainly used by the Portuguese as a prison to detain citizens that were considered political opponents of the regime. This tour traces the history of the Catholic evangelization on the island after WWII, exploring original Portuguese architecture and understanding its functions in the past and present. During the tour, you will visit the structure and ruin of an old colonial prison, where prisoners were detained in underground exile during the Indonesian military occupation from 1978-1986. Visitors will also have a chance to talk with local women’s cooperatives and disabled artisans who craft beautiful jewelry, dolls, and other handicrafts.
