Snorkeling is a must do for anyone staying on Ataúro. Beloi Reef is a wonderful and readily accessible snorkeling site and the most visited reef among all Local Marine Protected Areas (tara bandus) on Ataúro. These tara bandu systems are unique to Timor-Leste, with local communities employing conservation tactics to preserve their reefs while profiting from tourism revenues ($2 for each time you snorkel) so you can feel good about taking this tour. The reef is located in front of the pier and has been recorded to have more than 300 unique species of fish. The village of Beloi has around 300 individual fishermen who operate 10-20 fishing boats that can provide rides and snorkeling experience on the most biodiverse reef on the planet. People from all over the world are travelling thousands of miles just to reach this site.
Please ensure that you apply sunscreen at least an hour before you snorkel or, better yet, use protective clothing so as to avoid sunscreen damaging our pristine reefs.
