Beloi to Adara

  • Start: Beloi town sign (just after Barry's)
  • Finish: Adara Beach
  • Distance: 8.7 km/5.4 mi (one way)
  • Walking Time: 3 hours
  • Difficulty: Medium-Hard
  • Highlights: Whether you’re spending a night—or a week—in the secluded paradise of Mario’s Place, or enjoying an afternoon of snorkeling along epic reefs and sheer coral walls, this is a hike you cannot miss. This path is mostly frequented by those who have a few days to spare and hope to explore more of the island. Your path will take you from Barry’s Place in Beloi, through the village of Arlo, and down onto the beautiful white sand beach of Adara. You will enjoy expansive scenic views in all directions, dry grasslands and eucalyptus savanna transitioning into semi-evergreen forest, Arlo and Adara villages, limestone escarpments and small caves, and a variety of birdlife. If you’re eager to explore more, continue on to Atekru and stay in NaTerra, a lodge and permaculture farm, or you could even make a full circuit up to Makadade, Manukoko, and back down to Vila.
  • Trail Description: From Beloi town sign walk north past Barry’s Place, turn left at road intersection, walk a very short distance, veer left onto track (skirting north side of village). This is the main road that you will follow for 45 minutes to an hour until reaching an intersection: left will take you to Anartutu and continuing straight on a footpath will take you to Adara. After another hour or so walking downhill through grasslands, you will come to a bridge; follow the path heading straight just before the bridge, do not cross over it. Start descending through the forest eventually passing small caves/escarpments. Eventually you will cross over a style, walk past gardens and then arrive at Arlo. Walking down the south side of the village the road turns a right hand corner. Immediately past this corner (opposite the blue church) turn left onto a track. Cross a style and head down the hill again past rocky gardens and through the forest until you arrive at an escarpment and a view of the ocean. Climb down the track to the bottom (a short distance) and then look for a track heading off on your left. Continue south until you cross over a style as you enter Adara. Walk straight ahead down the village path until you reach your accommodation.
  • Equipment: Sports sandals/ good walking shoes; walking pole useful. Long pants and shirt (often mosquitos and horse flies on the trail).
  • Guide: Recommended but not required--will learn and see more with a guide; recommended to not walk alone in case of accidents. Most of the path does not have cell service
  • Variants: Can get 4WD drop off at road/track intersection above Arlo reducing walking time by 1 hour and takes out uphill section – in this case Grade Easy. Fit people could complete Beloi – Adara as a return day walk but not recommended due to heat in the afternoon (4WD pick up suggested with this return option to avoid exposed grassland/eucalyptus section).
