Due to its position on the slope of the mountains, Makili provides the best vantage point to soak in the scenic mountains and forest of the island, with great views of Vila Maumeta and the ocean that stretches across to mainland Timor-Leste. While walking the pathways, visitors will enjoy the traditional housing of the hilly communities, meeting residents carving woods into various crafts. And down on the beach, visitors will find local boats going back and forth to Dili–try taking one back to the mainland if you crave adventure and some ocean spray in your face! You will also be able to witness traditional fishing tools (bubu) laid out along the beach.
The trek to Makili can be done either via a beach path or up through the mountains; the beach path is best done at low tide, and can get quite rocky and slippery when the tide is higher so be sure to wear proper (ideally close-toed and waterproof) shoes. If you take the beach path at high tide, you will get wet so please be prepared and bring a change of clothes/shoes and protect your valuables with waterproof bags. When taking the beach path, you can walk alongside local students on their daily commute from Makili to Vila to attend classes.
